ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Greek authorities launched an international appeal on Friday to help identify a 4-year-old blonde girl allegedly snatched from her parents by a couple with whom she was found living in a Gypsy settlement.

Police are trying to establish why the girl was living with the couple, who are also accused of falsifying identity and family certificates – with the mother claiming to have given birth to six children within a total of less than 10 months.

The child was found Wednesday near Farsala in central Greece during a nationwide crackdown on illegal activities by Roma, also known as Gypsies. Police say they also found drugs and unregistered firearms in other parts of the settlement, which is about 280 kilometers (170 miles) north of Athens.

But the blonde, pale-skinned and blue-eyed girl stood out. She bore no resemblance to the Greek couple, a 39-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, who were arrested and charged with abducting a minor. Police said DNA testing confirmed that they weren’t related.

“Her features suggest that she might be from an eastern or northern (European) country,” regional police chief Panayiotis Tzavaras said.

Police have notified Interpol for assistance.

The suspects allegedly offered conflicting accounts – that the girl was found in a blanket, was handed to them by strangers or had a foreign father.

The police statement said the couple claimed to have a total 14 children, and had registered different numbers with authorities in three different parts of Greece. Officers found three minors living with them in the settlement who appear to be their children – although that hasn’t yet been verified by DNA testing.

The girl is in the care of the charity “A child’s smile,” which said Friday it has sought the assistance of European and global groups for lost or abused children in tracking her parents.

Charity director Costas Giannopoulos said the child was undergoing medical examinations.

“We are shocked by how easy it is for people to register children as their own,” he told private Skai TV. “There is much more to investigate, there are other registered children that were not found in the settlement, and I believe police will unravel a thread that doesn’t just have to do with the girl.”

Massive Nighttime Explosion in Indianapolis Obliterates Two Homes, Hundreds Evacuated

I first heard this story on top of the hour radio news last night about 3 am [ yes, I was up. ] No cause has been given for this colossal blast that reduced two middle class homes to piles of charred  and splintered rubble. Witnesses stated the blast made windows shake and could be felt for miles around. 200 people were evacuated after the blast. I might speculate a natural gas explosion could do this, but until we know more that’s just a guess. The article below is re-posted from CBS NEWS online:

Indianapolis A massive explosion sparked a huge fire and killed two people in an Indianapolis neighborhood where about three dozen homes were damaged or destroyed, authorities said Sunday. The powerful nighttime blast shattered windows, crumpled walls and could be felt at least three miles away.

Seven people were taken to a hospital with injuries after the explosion and fire, Deputy Fire Chief Kenny Bacon said.

Explosion destroys homes in Indiana

Fire Lt. Bonnie Hensley said firefighters put out the flames and then went through the rubble and damaged homes one at a time in case people had been left behind. She said they used search lights until dawn as they peered into the damaged and ruined homes. Two bodies were recovered.

Some witnesses said in televised reports that they heard people screaming “Help me! Help me!” after the explosion and fire and that two parents and two children were safely pulled from one house that caught fire.

The fire department has not released the names of those killed. Hensley said one body was found in one of the leveled homes after the fire was put out.

The explosion at 11 p.m. Saturday destroyed two houses that were side by side and spread fire to two other nearby homes in the neighborhood on the south side of Indianapolis.

Mark Lotter, a spokesman for the mayor, said about three dozen homes were damaged or destroyed. He said 27 were uninhabitable and another eight had significant damage.

The blast was heard for miles around. Authorities said they had no immediate information on the cause. The fire department and other agencies were investigating.

People who were asleep when the blast happened were evacuated in their pajamas, scooping up their pets as they left, authorities said. They left what some described as a chaotic scene of tall flames rising on the Indianapolis skyline.

Survivors reported shattered windows, caved-in walls and garage doors knocked off their hinges. Of the two homes that were leveled by the blast, Hensley said: “There’s nothing left.”

Bryan and Trina McClellan were at home with their 23-year-old son Eric when the shock wave from the blast a block away shook their home. It knocked out the windows along one side of their house, and their first instinct was to check on their grandchildren, two toddlers who were in the basement. One was holding his ears and saying “Loud noise, loud noise.”

Eric McClellan said he ran afterward to the scene of the explosion and saw homes flat or nearly so.

“Somebody was trapped inside one of the houses, and the firefighters were trying to get to him. I don’t know if he survived,” he said, adding that firefighters ordered him to leave the area.

All power, gas and other utilities in the area were shut off as a precaution as emergency officials swarmed the site.

About 200 people were taken to an elementary school, where some milled about in pajamas and coats they had grabbed as they fled. Some had their dogs on leashes, and one woman had evacuated her home with a cat. Most eventually left to stay with relatives, friends or at hotels, but 15 to 25 remained through the night, sleeping on cots.

Pam Brainerd, a 59-year-old hospice nurse, said she was asleep when the explosion blew out the upstairs windows in her house.

“I was sleeping on the sofa and all of a sudden, my upstairs windows were blowing out and my front door was falling in,” Brainerd said. “My front door came off the frame. It was the largest bang I’ve ever heard.”

She stepped outside and saw what she described tall flames one street away. “There was a house engulfed in flames, and I could see it spreading to other houses,” she added.

Inglewood California: Dead Man Found at Shooting Scene Wearing Body Armor

What began as a quiet and placid Sunday has disintegrated into reporting on two different senseless shootings in the same weekend. In California yesterday a dead body was found at the scene of a multiple murder. The dead man was wearing body armor.

I had just wrapped up reporting ten minutes earlier today on a mass shooting in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield just a few minutes earlier today. That shooter was found dead as well, after taking the lives of three and wounding four others. It had begun as a domestic dispute and a restraining order had been taken out on the suspect, Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, earlier this week.

Update 5 days later:

The only explanation I have for the kinds of news stories I am finding and the kinds of crimes taking place is that people seem to be suddenly snapping and literally going crazy. I have no other explanation for it. I found this story today on 10.25.2012:

3 Killed 4 Wounded in Shooting Spree in Brookfield Wisconsion, Suspect Radcliffe Franklin Haughton Found Dead

Preface:  Within four days of this news report there have been a series of mass shootings in several states. I was still reporting on the Milwaukee mass shooting below when two other mass shootings took place. Violent crimes have shot through the roof under the Obama presidency – up more than 20% in many states. Acts of violence against women have also escalated sharply during the past four years. There would appear to be a relationship between dire economic times, high unemployment, homelessness and rising violent crime statistics.

Police and ambulances are on the scene and the suspect, Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, is still at large. An improvised explosive device was found at the Azana Salon and Spa and bomb squads have been deployed to the scene.

Cited:  “Police, sheriff’s deputies and a bomb detection team were on the scene at Azana Salon and Spa, across the street from Brookfield Square Mall, Brookfield Police Lt. John Beth told the Associated Press. Law enforcement officials were searching for the suspect, Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45.”

Cited:  “The shooting happened about 11 a.m. at the Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from a major shopping mall in a middle- to upper-class community west of Milwaukee.
